21 Fall Ideas for Toddlers

As I was schlepping another load of laundry all the way to the basement (there’s not much I wouldn’t do for a laundry room next to my bedroom, but I digress…), I noticed my fall wreath adorning the basement wall from a hook. I can’t wait to hang it on my front door! It’s not that the wreath is something spectacular, it’s just that it’s the first sign that Fall is here! And, I love fall! Here, in Chicago, the weather is somewhat finicky but when it’s nice, it’s nice. Plus, I adore all things pumpkin and the different activities that you can take advantage of when it’s fall! Here is a list of 21 fall activities for toddlers for when fall is in full-swing!

Fall Fun:

  1. Go apple picking
    • Here are a couple of great spots near Chicago: Apple Holler or Harvest Time Orchards. We usually go to Harvest Time. Don’t forget to get your donuts, brats and bacon for home!
  2. Visit a pumpkin patch
    • We go to Goebbert’s in Barrington. It’s so much fun for the littles. Not only can you pick up some pumpkins you can also feed a pumpkin eating dinosaur, view pig races, visit a petting zoo and even feed a giraffe (which I’m not going to lie, is it not kind of weird that you can visit a giraffe at a farm?)
  3. Make pumpkin cookies for the neighbors
    • Do these not look phenomenal?
  4. Burn a fall-scented candle
  5. Make pumpkin scented play-doh
    • Playdough to Plato shared these 4 recipes for fall and we can’t wait to try them.
  6. Have a bonfire and make s’mores
  7. Rake and jump in a pile of leaves
  8. Go trick or treating
  9. Go on a Fall scavenger hunt
    • Chalkboards to Strollers created this adorable hunt, specifically for toddlers and preschoolers
  10. Collect leaves
  11. Make a pine cone craft
    • Here are some great ideas.
  12. Roast pumpkin seeds
    • These look really yummy.
  13. Make pumpkin pancakes
  14. Get photos for our Christmas card
  15. Go camping in the backyard (if I can talk my husband into it…)
  16. Go to a football game (if my husband can talk me into it…)
  17. Check out a Fall Festival
    • Again, we will probably check out the Fall Festival at Goebbert’s but there are many throughout the Chicago area. We always check out Fall Fest/Oktoberfest in Mount Prospect.
  18. Host a Halloween cookie decorating party
  19. Make all things apple: apple sauce & cider
    • Make use of all of those apples you picked!
  20. Carve Jack-O-Lanterns
  21. Watch said Jack-O-Lanterns get eaten by squirrels (or opossum like last year).

  1. I can’t wait for fall with my toddlers. It’s my favorite season of the year, and this will be the first time all of them are old enough to really enjoy activities. Good read.

  2. Thank you for sharing! I have a lot of these on my fall bucket list. I hate that my kids are getting older. It forces to me get creative in putting a spin on the Normal traditions.

  3. Fall is my absolute favorite time of the year! I live in Canada so we get all the pretty colours and the cool weather! We are going to be doing most of these – and i cannot wait!
I made a pumpkin bread recipe last year, so i am excited to make it again and revise it!

  4. So many great ideas! I absolutely love jumping in leaves and apple picking is so calming. I also love to make artwork out of the leaves collected, like leaf animals on paper

  5. Fantastic ideas. I will have to bookmark this page for activity ideas to do with the grandchildren. I am sure they’d love going to a pumpkin patch. They would be excited to carve their own designs on the pumpkins they’d take home.
